Data recovery and backup.
Jun 19, 2005 3:04AM PDT

1. Data recovery services:

2. Hard disks are terrible backups. I've written this dozens of times here and while I don't expect you to have read such, the posts just never stop about hard disk as "storage" stories. If you think a file is important, then a copy belongs somewhere other than a hard disk.

I Disagree

Bob,

The appropriate method for backing up data is to put the data on ANY media that can be stored away from the computer the data was backed-up from. External hard drives are actually the best medium for backing up data, especially if the source drive is greater than 80gb. At best, it would require 10 dual-layer DVDs to back that data up. And what about incremental backups after that?? Not even mag tape (YUK!) is very good at this.

I use an external HDD for my backups, and I use one for each of my 5 computers. I also use the other computers on my net to backup smaller directories for quick access.

As far as switching between USB and Firewire goes... just plug the USB cable back in and the drive should work just fine.

PLEASE HELP PEOPLE RECOVER THEIR DATA.

Yes. I hope you will now commit to the next 20 people who post "help me recover my backup on my external drive."

Will you do this?

In regards to firewire connected drives. Why is it an issue with Windows PCs and not the Mac? Any input would be helpful.

different drivers for different protocols... how would YOU backup data... say 120gbs??
note: I am a PC guru... not Mac... and life goes on... and yes I will help anyone who wants to learn.. I use Ontrack data recovery which has yet to fail me.

My backup is all of 25 GB.
Jun 23, 2005 3:26AM PDT

It's on 3 sets of DVDRW which I rotate. If a DVDRW media fails, I replace that disk and restart the backup.

Remember that I only need to backup "My stuff" so the number of GB is quite reduced.

If a person needs to backup 120GB, then there are options such as DLT (what we use at the office) and more. A person will reveal how much their data is worth to them if they don't backup or try to get by on the cheap.

Help others save themselves. Please.

Too fragile.

Their data vanished by unplugging the drive.

This is not backup. It's data suicide.
