External drive - No Icon in MY Computer

Apr 11, 2005 9:59PM PDT

It seems that numerous subscribers have the same problem:- Have an external hard drive but it does not show in My Computer. Mine is not a new installation and was showing for about 7 months until I installed Service Pack 2. It is still accessable through Disk management or Run with the drive letter. It shows normal, healthy and works fine. It can be defraged, tuned and shows in a host of application programs.
If S/P 2 is the problem, apart from formatting, can S/P 2 be deleted. I have reseached a number of forums but no one has any answers. Changing drive letters does not help either! Please you boffins, some answers????????

Are any drive letters hidden in Explorer?

Again, TWEAKUI can help here.

External Hard Drive - No Icon My Computer

Have completely searched the computer, no icon anywhere. The drive light responds when accessing. When I want to remove the drive, I go to "safely remove hardware" and the drive letter is showing.

What else can I offer?

I noted that TWEAKUI can be used to hide and unhide drive letters. If you didn't use this information, then what can I offer?

External Hard Drive - No Icon in My Computer

First off I did not know what TWEAKUI was or did or where to get it.
I downloaded it and installed it. In TWEAKUI, I put a tick against the J: drive and applied it.
I then went to access the disk and it said it could not access and was corrupt. No matter what I tried it said it could not access and was corrupt, yet 10 minutes prior I was using it. I then ran CHKDSK J:/p and then CHKDSK J:/r. It took some time. At no stage did it report any problems. When CHKDSK had finished I then went back to TWEAKUI, checked the J drive and applied it. I the checked in My Computer and Explorer and I am pleased to say that the icon is there. You have fixed my problem. Obviously there was some errors on the disk which have been repaired. I appreciate your help and thankyou!

That's what GOOGLE is for and ...

Why you should ask if some item is unclear. If you read these forums you find that an ALL CAPITAL item is the clue some moderators use to note a software or product the member should go look for or even ask. If you don't ask or note you don't know what it is then I'm left with "I wonder why they didn't try it?"

TWEAK UI for "hidden icons" on an XP machine - desktop
May 2, 2010 10:52PM PDT

Just experienced exactly the same problem with an XP computer. My new Buffalo turbo 500gb External Hard drive was showing on all other XP computers in the office except my own but was shopwing in the device manager. Downloaded Tweakui, found the icon repair or rearrnage section - and BOSH - "Bob's your uncle"

Cheers. This CNET site is excellent.
