Resolved Question

Extending network

May 15, 2017 12:11PM PDT

I'm in the process of setting up CCTV for the company I work for. The trouble is, they have two buildings, building one is set up, but building two has no network. I have a 250 feet Ethernet cable that will run from the main office of building one to building two and I need to know how to begin a network there. I know we plan on using a dvr for CCTV, will eventually have a computer, and maybe a printer. Thanks.

I'd either have this done for you

Or just add a switched hub at the other end. If your job would be at risk if this fails, draw up the RFQ and get quotes. As presented this is a first year IT job. Nothing special at all and since everyone starts somewhere, give yourself more time to take courses, etc.

The TL;DR.

Put a switched hub at the other end and plug in your devices there.

That was where I was going.

We aren't a big company, we have 4 computers right now in building one. I'm not worried about risking my job.

The parting tip.

Always bench test the switch and gear before plugging into the other end. I've lost count how many times it's just another bad cable or wrong pairs used.
