Extended Warranty Purchase

Feb 22, 2006 3:55AM PST

Hi Everyone:

My question today is about buying an additional warranty for my new TV. I am going to buy the Sony KDS R60XBR1 within the next few days.

Most of the online retailers that I have visited sell extended warranty for the TV for anywhere from 3-5 years for an outrageous amount of money (usually at least $500-$700). I have noticed on EBay that these same warranties sell for $225 (Mack Warranty).

Is there anything I need to worry about with respect to these warranties purchased on EBay? They are sold from reputable sellers.

what happens when the tv breaks?

not tryig to sell you anything. but with all extended warrenties, find out what they will do for you after the tv breaks. some warrenties are just extensions of manufactorer warrenties while others cover much more.

i can only vouch for best buy. $399 for 4 years. it is an IN home service, which covers anything due to wear and tear including wear and tear on the remote (if you have kids). the lamp in the tv costs $250 from sony, not including labor charges, or anything else that might break. our 4 year plan covers up to 3 of those light bulbs within 4 years. if we dont have the part to fix it, or if it costs too much money to fix it, we'll give you a little piece of paper, tel you to go back into the store, and pick up a new tv of YOUR choice. you will get the original amount you paid for it, plus tax in store credit for you to use towards 1 tv. microdisplays are the only thing i'd buy an extended warrenty on...if it actually covers stuff that are useful.

But, I would have to buy the TV from Best Buy in this case - and most likely - pay up to $1000 more for the TV. That is a lot of money.

shipping isn't free online.

Check out the dimensions on that tv. It's freaking huge. Shipping will cost you enough to cover going into Best Buy and buying it. Not to mention buying warranties from online retailers when Best Buy offers a Service plan. A service plan is a way better then the simple warranty.

shipping on these tv's on "online retailers" are usually around $250.

retail on this tv is $4500. we sell this tv almost once every few days by marking it down to $4k. and we'll do other things to help customers out. we can haggle if you ask nicely. this is a high markup tv.
