Ext. HD - corrupted directory

Aug 8, 2006 11:07AM PDT

Help! My external drive has a corrupted directory. Unfortunately I apparently originally formatted it as NTFS.

When I try to open it, I get an error: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

When I try to use Norton Disk Doctor 2002, I get the following error: The volume does not contain a recognized file system.

I also tried to check the disk using Partition Magic 7.0, but got an error almost immediately and was unable to continue: Severity: Critical, Descripion: Bad file record signature. Then it stops, with Error #7: Operation canceled by user (I didn't cancel it, it halts almost immediately.)

I have Windows 2000. I don't know how it got corrupted, but perhaps it might have done so when I shut down the computer with it still on and plugged in. It was working just a few days ago, and it is still fairly new and unused. I really want to save the data on it (mostly photos).

Any ideas?
