You both need to turn OFF the sharing on the iTunes Library and turn ON Home Sharing. It is different.
From there you can connect to your son's library and ask iTunes to show you all the tracks that are on your son's computer that are NOT on your computer.
Select the ones you want to copy from his machine to yours, hit the button and the files are transferred from his to yours.

I would like to export at least a portion of my son's shared iTunes library on his local network and then import those items into my iTunes library on my laptop. I have tried everything I can think of and cannot make it happen. I have gotten a file exported to my /user name/itunes/music folder named name iTunes library.xml but can find no way to import that info/music into my library.
Any help would be appreciated!
