Exploring the handheld from the PC

Jun 13, 2005 2:09AM PDT

Ok, here's my problem. The handheld screen got shattered, the LCD screen is intact, but the touch-capability is gone. So, we got a new handheld, but now the problem is that we are unable to recover the address book from the old handheld, since we can't activate the hotsync feature (it's a sony cli

Software?

Sony supplied it on CD with the unit. You can try the latest HOTSYNC from www.palmone.com

Just asking a favor here. You asked for software, but didn't reveal what said software needed to do. In the future, try to ask a bit more?

yes I did:
"is there anyway to browse the handheld using some software from the PC , in order to activate the hotsync feature, or save the adress book files?"

Get the heck outta here.

Such language. You already had asked that question and in a later post was not clear you were repeating the same request.

-> Let me be blunt. With a dead LCD, "this will never happen." However if I had that hotsync cradle, I could get the job done.

You also don't want to know that I'm a Palm software developer and didn't tell you a dark secret since you didn't seem the type to be able to slice open the cable and wire in your own hotsync button. Since the crable cures this for very little bucks, I won't be sharing that information.

Watch the language.

you lost me there, I'm not sure why yo got mad at me.
This is my first post, I never asked this before.
I'm sorry for the "***", it was just an expression of confussion, I didn't mean to be rude, honestly.

I just wondered what additional software you were after since your later post asked for "software" without detail. I'm sharing how to get the hotsync to happen without using the LCD area.

If this isn't good enough, then we'll wait to see if any other solution shows up.

thanks mate.
no luck with the cradle, the model my friend bought came with a charging cable, not the cradle.
The software I'm looking for is for operating the handheld from my PC. Or at least exploring it, in order to save the address book.
Anyway, just activating the hotsync feature would be good enough.

Catch 22 situation. And another solution.

To explore the unit from a PC would require you hotsync in some software. That you can't do...

To retrieve the goods, you only need to hotsync. Ooop, no can do that either.

-> Buying the cradle would be 20 bucks or near that. If that's not worth it, then you just revealed the information's worth.

--> Remember I know something about many Palm devices? All we need to do is to hit the HOTSYNC on the connector to start the process. http://www.palmclub.nl/forums/showthread.php?postid=110221 and other places show that PIN 12 (Hotsync) needs to be connected to Pin 2 or 18 (Gnd).

2 - (1) - GND
3 - (2) - USB D+
4 - (3) - USB D-
5 - (4) - USB GND
6 - (5) - VBUS (USB +5V)

10 - (9) - NC
11 - (10) - UItgang accu (3,4-4,2V)
12 - (11) - Hotsync (laag aktief, anders open(tristate))
13 - (12) - DTR (RS232)

15 - (14) - TxD (RS232)
16 - (15) - CTS (RS232)

18 - (17) - CNT (periphrial detect (220kOhm weerstand naar ground)

The PEG will then run Hotsync and you just quickly drop the paper clip and slip on the hotsync cable.

Wish I was there to show you the magic trick.

-> here's a small sample of my Palm work. Hint: it's just the tip of the iceberg: http://www.geocities.com/palmpass/index.html

let me get this straight
Jun 15, 2005 3:46AM PDT

So what you're telling me, is to pick up a paper clip and make contact between these two pins? You mean the pins in the handheld terminal?
Ok, I'll try that and let you know how it went.

No repeats here.
Jun 15, 2005 3:58AM PDT

That's what the hotsync button in the cradle does.

It's just sad I couldn't do the magic trick for you, but once I tell you the secret then it's no longer a secret. Be sure to pour over that pin numbering since I see it's a little odd.

At least you'll hear the hotsync tune if you get it right. You must have the usb cable ready or you'll have to press the soft reset button then the paper clip trick to get it a second time.

-> Can I ask? You seem to be a non-Palm person. Do you own one?
