Explorer High CPU usage...

Feb 5, 2004 4:11PM PST

when I try to open any basic explorer window or try to go into the Explore option, my explorer suddenly jumps to 50%+ CPU usage and doesn't open up the window. Try and try again...nothing occurs until I max out my CPU usage. However, explorer has no issues running programs at all. PLZ help...McAfee says there isn't a virus...but I dunno. Plz help!

WEll, ran a few more tests. Tunup Utilities registry checker finds nothing wrong, the disk cleaner also finds nothing, Scan Disk finds nothing when checking for errors as well. It's so weird. I can click browse in the run command and it runs fine, but if I doubleclick on a folder to open it my CPU usage spikes up to 50 and then up to 100% and stays there unable to open the folder at all. Plz, I really need help here!

That's a new clue.

If you open a folder with EXPLORER (key word here) and the CPU usage peaks, then you might have a corrupt JPEG or other file in there.

EXPLORER does NOT handle such files well and you get to use other file browsers to find the faulty file.

Nothing new here.

1. I use Gyula's Navigator when I run across this issue.
2. How did the Pest and Parasite scans turn out?

The scans for the most part turned out nothing so far...two are still running right now. Anyways, I'm still having issues. I can't search, open any folders (including My Computer) except through the browse option under run. However, I can still run any application. This is too wierd. Any suggestions?

Move graphical items out of My Documents.

Again, it's a common problem with no imminent cure from MS. I use Gyula's Navigator to view the directory and move images (JPG, BMP) and any file that Explorer may try to construct a preview from out of the directory to test for the problem.

If that fixes the Explorer hang on browse, then I take 1/2 of the files into another directory and find which 1/2 has the problem.

Now I halve that and retest. It doesn't take long to find the corrupt JPG file (for me, this is the most common right before .AVI and .MPG files.)

I wish I had some other non-manual test method.

where can I get that program?

It's a "file manager."

Explorer is Microsoft's idea of some sort of configurable file browser that hides files, adds items and as I've seen can trip up over itself trying to build thumbnails. I mentioned Gyula's Navigator which you can find with http://www.google.com, but do look at http://www.ztree.com/ as well. This is a personal choice item.

After running all the apps on the forementioned site, and moving all the image files within any directory of My Docs nothing has changed...<sighs>...anyway I could replace the explorer app and try that?
