explorer.exe has generated errors . . .

Feb 9, 2004 2:53AM PST

[PIII, 256 mb ram, win2k Pro]

He has a Xerox multifunction device (print, fax, scan, copy) which as a Pagis Inbox shortcut on the desktop. When he opens that folder and tries to open one of the files, he gets this error:

Explorer has generated errors and needs to be restarted.

Generating error log . . .

and then the windows closes. Sometimes, immediately afterward, the active desktop has disappeared and the white desktop is shown. Sometimes not.

I've disabled Active Desktop now.

Why does this occur and how do I resolve it?

Since it's a Xerox/Pagis issue and not a Windows 2000 issue, you should look to Xerox for them to supply support.

Be aware that updates could be available that may help or hinder.

Be aware that some offices don't update to SP4 plus latest patches leaving the machine vulnerable to today's pests and worms. Your post neglected this, but I run into the issue too often to not note it.

What to work.

The model of the device was not noted. The driver versions of all the suspect components would be updated to latest. This includes:

Video, motherboard, printer and OS patches and drivers.

A call to Xerox to see if they have a quick cure.

A look in the Event Viewer to check if the EventID offers a clue to the failure.

A test for any and all pests and parasites since too machine machines host such.
