orngnblu,

Well, we know that you can't start your computer, plus you have Windows 98. Unfortunately, I can't find any information about the "WDMOI.DLL" file. Did you type that file name correctly? As a result, it may be some sort of "malware" that was placed on the computer.

Can you start the computer in "Safe Mode" like this:

Restart the computer, pressing the F8 key once per second, till it loads a selection screen. Use the up and down arrows to select "Safe Mode", press enter, and the computer will load into a safe mode. It looks like a normal screen but with Safe Mode in each of the four corners. The various drivers don't work in Safe Mode but it allows you to Scandisk and Defrag. When you?re done, restart the machine and it will boot normally.

If it correctly starts in "Safe Mode", click on Start-Run, type "msconfig", (without the quotes), then UNCHECK all the boxes in that section except for Scan Registry and System Tray. Click on "Apply", then OK and the computer will ask to be restarted. Do it. Does it know start in "normal" Windows?

If it now starts correctly, then please run a free online virus scan from the red link below. Delete all infected files it finds:

Panda Online Virus Scan

After that, download, install, update and run the free spyware removal tools from the links below.:

i tried what you said and it did not work. i can run a scan virus with the error up but it hasnt found anything. ive ran a pc bug doctor and it found and repaired errors but it did not improve the problem. it still says WDMOI.DLL i could not find anything about it either.i think my only option is going to be to restore from an earlier date.

Panda! All in all, I wasn't the least impressed.

'owdy Grif,

I was simply curious about your recommendation on this utility the other day when I had plenty of 'nothing to do', so decided to give my system a check - Win98FE, MSIE v5.01SP2 w/oodles of memory and hard drive space, and connecting with Cable.

Can't say I was impressed in the least.

1. I let it run for approximately an hour where it reached just about 62,000 files and it wasn't half way through the drive. With Cable, that thing is slow and I'm glad I didn't have to use DUN.

3. It found several of my test files I have on the system for virus, which it found and added the extension of .vir to the end of the current name.

4. I use PCMag utility Inctrl5 to monitor changes when I let anything install on the system. I found, Added 207 registry keys and 221 registry values; Values changed: 55; quite a few files and folders were added which included many from the TIF, so I'll not state the number here since I didn't want to weed those non-applicable out.

2. Deleted the following key which IMHO this utility had no business fooling with:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AP\PFE\001\Configurations\DefaultConfiguration\MruList "10"
Type: REG_SZ
Data: "D:\Viewer\PLUGINS.TXT",0,6161,3a79699e,0,0,447,822,1,0

Note: "HouseCalls" comparison was 48 Registry entries and about twice that for values, with 27 files added. We understand many of these utilities do this -- some just worse than others.

Cursorcowboy, Yep, Panda Is 'Slow' !
Feb 22, 2004 3:39AM PST

Hi Bill,

I've used Panda quite a few times, yet it seems like it's not much slower whether using dial-up or broadband. Not sure why, except that much of it's operation is local. In my experience with it, Panda seems to do a good job of detection and removal though. Unfortunately, as you have seen, it installs a fair amount of stuff on the local computer.

Still, there is a method to my madness. I normally suggest both Panda and Housecall and I'm not sure why I didn't this time, but those two are the best online scanners that will DETECT virus AND REMOVE viruses while running the scan, at least in my dealings with online scanners. McAfee and Norton both have online scanners,(Norton's does a good job while I'm not happy at all with the McAfee version) as do a few others, but most DO NOT remove the infected files. In my opinion, Housecall and Panda are the best because they REMOVE infected files as well as detect them.

Because they both have this added ability, it also explains why they tinker with more settings on the local machine. In addition, I've seen quite a few situations where users couldn't get Housecall to run, but the Panda program would. Giving both programs allows the use of an alternate. If the infection is causing issues with the "onboard" antivirus program, I think it's the best way to get a quick virus scan. (Although, obviously, Panda doesn't do it as "quickly" as Housecall.)

Hope this helps.

Grif

Let's start the other way around.

Find that offending dll (wdmoi.dll), or maybe even better all wdmoi (wdmoi.*) with Explorer and tell us all about it. What folder it's in, and what does the properties sheet tell you about the maker, version and purpose.

Also scan the registry for wdmoi (with scanreg) and, if found, tell us on the context (which registry key it's in).
