What is the difference between an external hard drive and an expansion drive?

As I don't see specific models I can't check it out further.

I am thinking it's just marketing.

Sounds like it is nothing more than just a pre-formated drive.

The exp drive is a plug+play device.
The seagate units that I looked at have a rather short warranty period.

An external hdd will require you to partition and format the unit before you can use it.
Warranty varies by which hdd you pick.
