Expanding my wired home network. How?

Jun 5, 2005 6:11PM PDT

I have DSL and I am currently sharing my connections with a Microsoft wired router with two computers. No problems at all. Now though, I have a two new computers in the second floor of my house and I would like to add them to the wired network that is hosted on the first floor. The rooms in the second floor are quite far, like 30 meters away, but network cable is cheap so that isn't a problem. What i'd like to do though is to have just one cable going from my router to the second floor instead of two. I still want to connect both computers upstairs. So my question is: do I need an extra hub to do this or another router? These would go upstairs. If I only need a hub, will my main router still do all the connection-splitting duties?I'd really appreciate your input.

I would opt for a switch and not a hub...

on the second floor. From the switch you can branch out. The router still acts as the DHCP server handing out IP addresses.

I got a 15 dollar Netgear switch and it basically does what you are describing.
