What brands you use just wireless and security protocols.
thanks

I have an existing wireless network, with a Netgear FWG114P firewall/router/print server. I'm pretty happy with it but the signal is a bit weak in some distant parts of the house that are shadowed by brick walls, especially for my wife's Mac Powerbook.
I've been looking at ways to strengthen the signal and, from what I can tell so far the existing (Buffalo and Linksys) wireless repeaters/extenders/expanders on the market all seem to require that you use their particular routers as well, ie that I need to replace my existing (otherwise-excellent) Netgear router.
Is this correct? Must both the router and repeater/etc always be matched (and even be the same brand)? And must they all be "WDS compatible" or equivalent?
If so, are there any ways to strengthen the signal on an existing wireless network apart from (a) getting a better antenna for the router (and the Netgear has a 5dBi one already) or (b) starting from scratch with a new matched router+repeater?

PS As it happens, my wife was given an Airport Express with her PowerBook - which I also couldn't get to talk to the Netgear - and from reading around that seems to need a (WDS?) compatible router too ... and preferably Apple's own Airport Basestation!
