EXE file association lost

Dec 11, 2009 12:01PM PST

. . .I think. I was transferring files from my old pc to my new pc and tried to open up an exe file and the "open with" box asked me to choose a program to open it with. I selected Windows Media Center. The "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" was checked, and I couldn't uncheck it. After that, all my programs want to open as Windows Media Center.

I have tried system restore but it errors out on me.
I have tried "regedit" but it doesn't work.
I have scanned for virus with Panda on-line (since my MCAFEE won't open).

Any ideas of what I can do?

Fixed exe file assoc.

I basically followed the instructions on this link:

http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/165/1/Restore-the-exe-file-association-in-Windows-Vista-after-incorrectly-associating-it-with-another-application.html

I just downloaded the program and then "merged" and that seemed to fix the problem. I didn't have to go do anything in the registry as the instructions say.

Hope this helps. Another link that I looked at is
