Question

Exception 0xC0000005

Aug 22, 2015 4:03PM PDT

Howdy! Thanks for taking the time to look at my issue.

I have been building computers for a while but this one has stumped me and I would love any feed back you could provide.

Specs:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590 @ 3.30 GHz
ASRock H97M-ITX/ac LGA 1150
2 x 8GB DDR3 1600
Windows 7 64-bit Professional

Example Error:
Faulting application name: igfxCUIService.exe, version: 6.15.10.3993, time stamp: 0x5448df5f
Faulting module name: igfxCUIService.exe, version: 6.15.10.3993, time stamp: 0x5448df5f
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000000000000eda8
Faulting process id: 0x454
Faulting application start time: 0x01d0dd0a1416c404
Faulting application path: C:\Windows\system32\igfxCUIService.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\igfxCUIService.exe
Report Id: 53077f3d-48fd-11e5-af7b-4cbb58b5c356

This issues only seems to present it self in 64 bit applications. Strangely though, plenty of 64 bit applications run without fault.

Steps have taken to resolve the issue:
Flashed the BIOS to versions 1.7 and 1.8
Validated the RAM speed to be 1600
Removed the video card and used the on board chipset
Replaced the RAM with a 3rd, known to be good, stick
Ran "sfc /scannow" with no errors.
Ran a memory diagnostic with no errors.
Ensured all drivers are up to date (chipset, video, etc)
Ran Intel Diagnostic Tool with no errors

From what I can tell, I have narrowed down the issue to:
- a bad driver that I still haven't resolved
- a bad Windows installation (unlikely considering some 64-bit apps work)
- a bad motherboard

I have fired off an email to ASRock asking for any additional help they could provide but no response yet.

Thanks for your help!

Clarification Request
6.15.10.3993? There are newer versions.

I can't guess why an old version is in place when you see it faulting.

Answer
That BSOD has prior discussions.

Not a BSOD
Aug 22, 2015 4:25PM PDT

I am pulling the error from the error log; not a BSOD.

I did recognize that it was the igfx driver after posting which I have since removed but I still get this error from other 64 bit applications.

It is worth noting too that I get this error with no video card drivers installed or the video card physically being connected. This occurred with the most basic setup:
PSU
Motherboard
Harddrive
Single stick of known good memory

The usual fix is the same.

The igfx is not your Nvidia faulting. And there are basic drivers installed even if we installed only from a Microsoft Windows DVD.

I wonder if we need to repeat how to setup a Windows PC? Here's the quick version.

1. Update all firmware in BIOS, HDD, Video card, SSD and other things.
2. Set all BIOS to defaults with as few changes as needed to get going.
3. Install Windows.
4. Install motherboard chipset driver then audio, video, LAN, WiFi in that order.
5. Let Windows do its updates until done.
6. Add the second GPU. Install those drivers and apps.

Repeat step 5.

Should be fine at that point.

I'll give it a go.

I understand that igfx is not Nvidia. Nor do I think the Nvidia drivers or card itself is faulting.

I do think this is either driver or hardware related. Consequently, I think your suggestion of starting from scratch is pretty much all I have left before I explore hardware return options. I appreciate you following up.

I misunderstood.

I thought you already pulled the GPU and followed Intel's advice. Bets a complete redo.

No luck =\

I followed your previous steps exactly but I am still getting the same error.

Example:
Faulting application name: TESV.exe, version: 1.9.32.0, time stamp: 0x51437ce5
Faulting module name: TESV.exe, version: 1.9.32.0, time stamp: 0x51437ce5
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00b52e8a
Faulting process id: 0x13f0
Faulting application start time: 0x01d0dd820adfa16d
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\TESV.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\TESV.exe
Report Id: 4985a0b2-4975-11e5-8f4a-4cbb58b5c356

Any other ideas?

That's not the error you shared up top.

Also, what is 6.15.10.3993? There are newer versions of the faulting app you gave.

If you are getting a cacophony of errors then my suspect moves from the iGFX area to system issues like a new build that has issues.

Finally we have games that will cause BSODs under some conditions. Just for discussion I'll pick Dwarf Fortress II that will cause some video drivers to BSOD if Triple AAA is set to 16. Folk debate if that's a driver, game or OS bug but setting it to 4 fixes it.

This is a new build.
Aug 23, 2015 8:30AM PDT

That's correct. I mentioned in the original post that I am getting this error in a number of 64 bit applications, but not all.

I also mentioned that I have building machines for a while but wasn't explicit that this is a new build. That is the case here; all parts in question are brand new.

I could totally understand the conditions causing certain games to fail but this seems more of a systemic issue than a few one offs.

As to the intel graphics driver, I am using what came with the mobo install disc. I've since updated that as well. I've also updated the BIOS to 1.8 (1.7 came on the install disc). I have also tried the latest two graphics drivers from NVIDIA.

I re-read the top post
Aug 23, 2015 6:23PM PDT

All I have is the example error. And the app that faulted is out of date so we can't expect it to work right. To work these faults I work them one by one.

Something may be faulty in how you get your updates. I head to the maker's site or for Intel items, Intel.com.

Until I get more errors I can't see if there is a tie that binds them all or head in a new direction.
