Question

Excellent wireless connection, but no internet access

Aug 28, 2012 1:04AM PDT

Hi,

My family is currently having a problem with one of our computers connecting to the internet. We have two laptops in the house, both connected to wireless internet. My computer works perfectly fine and loads webpages without a problem. My parent's computer is the one we are having an issue with. The wireless indicator at the bottom of the screen says that they are connected to the wireless and they have an excellent signal. However, when they try to access the internet the webpages won't load. Instead of loading, the browser says "Server not found". We use Firefox, but I have also tried Internet Explorer and that also does not work.

I have tried a couple different solutions suggested by troubleshooting sites, but have not been able to fix it yet. The TCP/IP Properties are set to obtain both the IP address and the DNS server address automatically. I have also tried flushing the DNS cache, still without success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! The computer is a Dell Inspiron, and it is running Windows XP. Thank you!!!

Answer
There are 2 common failures.

1. Norton/Kapersky or such has expired and has blocked the internet until you update or uninstall them.

2. The date and time is too far off.

3. The WiFi security is set to WEP. If I don't get the password right, WEP does exactly what you noted. And since folk can't check if that is right, I suggest you move to WPA2 AES personal security since it will respond with "incorrect password" rather than do what you see today.

It was McAfee!

Thank you for taking the time to respond! It turns out that it was McAfee all along. Apparently they did an update over the weekend that cause quite a few customers to lose internet access. I uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee and now it works just fine.

Internet seems to be blocked on Wireless only
Aug 3, 2013 11:33PM PDT

My XP machine is part of a network with Windows Home Server 2011, and all the internal connections work well (file sharing, WHS connection and monitoring...). But I couldn't update AVG because it wouldn't connect to their web-site, and no other web-sites would work either. Then I noticed that the other end of the Cat5 cable to my switch was disconnected, leaving only the WPA connection. For some reason, that seemed to be blocking Internet access. It's not a router restriction, as I signed into another wifi router on my other line and had the same problem.

The problem persists even though AVG is now up to date.

The date and time come from the router, so are the same as on all the other machines.

Any ideas?

Too many.

I can only guess you posted here because you have McAfee and WHS. If not, I suggest a new post with the missing detail.

Answer
No internet access

I agree with pcubed55. I have had problems with two computers running Mcafee, but not with one running Norton. I had to uninstall Mcafee and reinstall it. Now, after I have spent hours trying to get to the bottom on this problem, I note that Mcafee has admitted they have caused this most recent problem, and has posted solutions that can be found by googling "no internet access" or similar.

I am not a happy Mcafee customer at this point! They have wasted hours of my time!
