I found employment and they say the time sheets are done on the computer.Excel and lotus (not sure if spelling is correct) was mentioned.I was told since my OS is 2K I should have it,I can't find it.Does anyone know anything about this.

Excel is part of Microsoft Office. It can also be purchased separately at most retail computer stores. It isn't cheap. There are other office suites that are compatible with Microsoft Office that you might be able to instead. Open Office is often recommended on this forum. I haven't used it so I can't vouch for how well it works with Excel.

Our company used XL as a timecard application for a while. Did you try searching for *.xls and *.xl*? There shouldn't be too many to inspect. Likewise, did you check on any network drives? Is there a reason why you didn't ask someone there for a little help?

reason I did'nt ask on network drives,I have no idea what that is,this is the reason I posted on the newbie forum.I googled excel and found some info,which I have no idea what they are saying.

....are you working out of your home, using your own equipment?

If you are required to use your own equipment, as the others suggested, you'll need to install a program which opens and uses Excel documents...Just because the computer has Windows 2000, doesn't mean that it has Microsoft Office or compatible program installed. Microsoft Office includes a variety of programs such as Word, Excel, Access, etc. and you might need them all...As Gail mentioned above, if you need to install the program yourself, "OpenOffice" can be downloaded, installed, and used much cheaper than Microsoft's version.

If the job is required to supply the computer programs, then it's possible that they have a commercially licensed version of Office from which you can install the program...You'll want to check because Office is expensive..

It's not an office job,nor working at home using my home equipment.It's a service tech position,I was told that the company does time sheets electroniclly via excel and he mentioned something called lotus,and I have no idea what these things are.There is no need for a computer for the job,just for time sheets,and I beleive order parts.You mentionted "it's possible that they have a commercially licensed version of Office from which you can install the program",they made no mention of this,so I can presume this matter is left to me.

RE: Are you saying that all I have to do is download open office and it will work as excel?

Microsoft works spreadsheet will open an Excel product but


If they use any type of clip art it will be missing and also the colours of the fonts will be different in Works than they are in Excel

I would contact the company and find out more details. If they expect you to use Excel as part of your employment, they may provide it for you. It really isn't that uncommon.

Open Office is an alternative to Microsoft Office and it is free. But how well its spreadsheet works with the what the company uses, I can't say. Gail
