Excel 2003, encyrption problem

Feb 27, 2007 6:22PM PST

I encrypted an excel file and there was no problem. Then I installed two new drives in RAID 1 and then moved that excel file from the Old drive to the RAID and now the certificate is unrecognized. I can't read the file anymore. Any suggestions?

Re: encryption

Sorry, I can't help you with this problem. Just a few questions:
- Surely you didn't MOVE but COPY? Can you still read the original version?
- What happens if you restore the original version from your backup?
- What happens if you move (or copy) it back to your Old drive? Can you read it then?
- Can you still read other encrypted files on the Old drive, or don't you happen to have such?

It would still be better to have an unencrypted version on some other medium (like your personal USB-stick), but I assume you don't have such.

I'm afraid http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290112 isn't really helpful here.

Was that an EFS XP system?
Feb 27, 2007 7:58PM PST

That issue is fairly well known. EFS is not to be toyed with like that. The certificate and how to use fails if you don't follow Microsoft's instructions on how to do so to the letter. http://www.lostpassword.com can reclaim this file for a small fee.
