EVERY COMPUTER OF MINE HATES ITUNES!!! WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?

Aug 3, 2007 3:20PM PDT

I have a new Dell XPS 410 desktop customized running Windows XP Pro, a Sony Vaio laptop running xp, another desktop and laptop. All Running Windows XP sp2 of one sort or another. My dilemma is, that EVERYTIME I download itunes, some type of configuration does not like it. When downloading, I make sure I check the "WINDOWS VERSION" but for some odd reason, I start to get "NOT RESPONDING" while trying to close other applications, sometimes error messages, but not all the time. I get at least one NOT RESPONDING everytime I try to close some applications. I was wondering if I need some kind of "PLUG IN" to make itunes more compatible, or what? I sure hope someone can tell me what's up, and exactly what to do.
Thank You to Everyone who reads this insanity.

Can't do exact.

I have run into a few that installed the OS themselves and will share a recurring issue. Many will forget some motherboard driver package or something else. I have to dive in and work my normal list of drivers until I find it. The owner usually says "but it works" to which I have to say "Ok, I'm done." and they say "But this doesn't work." and I say "Oh so it doesn't work?" You get the picture.

Next up are the cracked XP Pro installs. These are no fun at all since the cracks seem to break other software. There is no real cure short of obtaining the real deal.

Hey Bob,
Thanks for the reply. I don't quite understand what you mean, but I am a reformed "EXTREMELY INQUISITIVE, ADHD, RAPID CLICK FINGERED, WHAT IS THAT, I DON'T KNOW, I'M GOING TO FIND OUT , WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES, WHAT ARE PROPERTIES, I DON'T KNOW BUT I AM GOING TO CHANGE THEM, OH MY GOD, THAT LOOKS INTERESTING, THINK I'LL CLICK THAT, OH **** MY COMPUTER IS MESSED UP AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO NOW, CUZ I HAVE BEEN WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE, TWEAKED AND EXPLORED MORE THAN CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS, AND GOT LOST SOMEWHERE AND CAN'T FIND MY WAY OUT KINDA GIRL. So my friend, I will not touch anything anymore. Way too much trouble I get in, and too many techs have chewed me a new one. Can you give me a simple answer??? Silly

The details could help.

I noted one recurring issue so I'll repeat it since I didn't get a clear answer.

-> When the OS was installed, who did it?

The answer may tell me a lot about if they knew to find all those drivers that Microsoft does not fetch for us.

-> In closing "it doesn't work" is not much to work with. "Error messages" and "when I do this, that happens" will find more use here.

The OS was installed by Dell. Everything was already installed. Is that what you mean?

Dell usually gets it right.

We do have problems from time to time with spyware and malware but so far all I have to work with is what you write here. No "error message" means I have nothing to work with.

Thank you again, Bob for taking this vague problem on.
If programs that you are shutting down properly, whether it be office outlook, itunes, etc. If you get a "NOT RESPONDING" message, can you please tell me why that happens. I am sure a million answers could be given, but when you open a new box w/ a computer, hook up all your stuff, and download itunes, and it decides to flip you off, I am puzzled. Now, I did not even have my "software purse" as I call it w/ all my programs, until today, so the only thing I could install was a printer, really. This may be a stupid thing to ask. I am new at this, and know just enough to get myself in trouble.
Thanks,
A

Now that a good clue.
Aug 4, 2007 10:22PM PDT

Usually when I find a system wide "not responding" issue it's usually spyware, malware or the antivirus suite. Since it was new I'm going to focus on the antivirus suite. Given no name to work with or how many demo days they gave you I'm going to give that one more weight.

What happens before the demo is up is the software seems to stop responding and areas get shut down that you wouldn't attribute to this suite (at first.)

What I end up doing is to uninstall this suite thoroughly (I won't duplicate web pages about how to do this) and if the owner doesn't have a replacement I'll install Free AVG and use Windows Firewall till it's sorted.

Scans of the system with Free AVG Antispyware follow and then we retest.

Well Bob,
The antivirus I use with all of my computers (and have paid for 2 years, and mistakenly paid for 6 computers, that's a blonde for ya) is ESET. I also use Ad-Aware 2007, and Spybot Search and Destroy, and I recently purchased Zone Alarm (zone lab)but have not installed it as of yet. I HAVE noticed a few people using AVG, and had it one time myself. So, knowing all of this, what do you think I should or should not do now?
Thanks Bob,
A

Now? Dig for clues.
Aug 5, 2007 5:50AM PDT

These suites are still notorious for "not responding" problems. But how does the average owner deal with this?

I don't have a good answer. I can only share my experiences.

-> Next up, digging for clues. When a program has to be ended for not responding I head to the EVENT VIEWER for clues.

OK, where is that (cowering w/ one eye open, cuz I swore to stay out of stuff)

Just so you know...

I don't duplicate ready web content. Typing XP EVENT VIEWER into any search engine should do fine.

But since we can't touch the Antivirus Suite I fear you'll not cure this one. It's a recurring issue for me with too high a cure rate.
