Every 10 mins exactly, internet connection is lost

Aug 7, 2004 2:49AM PDT

System: Dell 4100 desktop wired to a new Microsoft MN500 wireless router - Dell 600m laptop with a wireless card. The router is connected to a (Comcast) cable modem.

The laptop wireless connection is flawless, allowing Internet connection anytime, without interruption. The laptop is 3mos old, and has Win XP.

The Dell desktop (Win Me, vintage 2001) is wired to the router as specified in the instructions with the supplied cable and was used to setup the router. After bootup the Internet connection is fine for exactly 10 mins, after which it drops out (I must then reboot to restore it). And 10 mins later, it drops again! And so on.

Prior to adding the router, the desktop/cable-modem system was operating fine for >3 years.

I will really appreciate any troubleshooting tips and help to fix this problem. Thanks in advance!

Is the firmware current in the new devices?

I'd check the router's settings. All of them. The linksys and dlink I have, have a setting to log out. I don't have your device or manual.

There is a 'settable' logout time in the Microsoft MN500 control software, but I have it at 99mins.

The other settings look OK per the HELP and manual information.

There is, in my router a time setting. The 0 setting means forever.

No luck .. it only accepts 1-99 min entries.

Just noticed something I had overlooked before ... since installing the MN500 router, I have another adapter listed (in addition to the Dial-Up and the Linksys ethernet adapters): it is "NDIS 1394 Net Adapter", and it also has a TCP/IP entry.

There IS a firewire card in my Dell which I have been using with an external hard drive for over a year (this is only wired to the Dell when I do a backup). Prior to installing this router though, it was NOT listed as a network adapter.

I have tried to remove these two lines but they return after rebooting. May not be doing it right?
Wonder if this is related to my "10-minute" headache?
Thank you for the time you're spending with me.
Mike.

Go into Device manger and double click your network adapters. Then double click the adapter. On the Power Managemnent Tab, uncheck "Allow the Computer to Turn off this Device to Save Power."

As to the 1394 connection, right click it in Network Properties disable it to temporarily eliminate it as a problem.
