Event logs

Feb 29, 2004 7:23AM PST

Win XP Pro SP1

I saved an event log, the name of which was automatically given the .evt extension. Now, when I want to open that file, Windows cannot reconize the file tpye, so doesn't know which program to use to open the file. How is this ? What program opens the event log ? (The icon for the file is the 'general file' icon) Thanks.

All log files can be opened with Notepad.

Try resaving as a .log file?

Thanks. I tried that (from the Event Viewer Action menu), but file is not saved. The folder to which I saved it was empty. (show all files enabled). However, I can copy and paste the contents to Notepad or MS Word, but formatting was lost, which was not waht I want. How is it that Windows was able to create the event file, showed it, and when saved by the user, gave it an .evt extension, yet was unable to associate the file with a program ? I would have thought that the file would have opened with 'Event Viewer', as was originally !

OK. Here's the deal with the Event Log Files.

You can save the event log as a .evt file into My Documents.
But the saved file will appear in the Console Tree on the Left Pane as a Saved Event Log.
So if you saved an Application Log which is displayed on the Console Tree you can then click it to display your saved log file in the Event Viewer.

The alternative is to Export the Log file as a Txt file and saved it to My Documents and it can be opened in NotePad.

Thanks. I did save the event log (a system event)as an .evt file into 'My Documents' and it was then found at '(User's name) Documents' where it cannot be opened. I am not sure where "Console Tree on the Left Pane" is to be found. All I can find (at Component Services) is 'Console Root' at he head of a list in the left pane. Maybe I missed something ?
