ethernet port functional?

Feb 5, 2007 5:29AM PST

i've had a problem trying to get my new d-link adsl modem/router to work. I think, and now hope that it is a problem with the only ethernet port on my pc. when the cable is plugged in, the light glows orange and doesnt blink. is this normal? is there something wrong with this ethernet port, and shall i just buy a d-link network card?

i have dell dimension 2400, windows xp.

Modem/router combos are a pain to troubleshoot.

Is there a green like also? Green light blinking is good.

Run ipconfig command to check internet connection

Run devmgmt.msc to check the network card property & status.

orange

thanks for replying. the right led is just orange, and the left led isnt on. i've looked for a long time to find out what that means and cant find anything.
the modem itself seems to be working fine. all the lights are on as they should be, but when i install it using the cdrom, it checks for the devices connectivity and then says "Modem not detected! Please check the following:
1.The power adapter is connected to your modem and electrical outlet
2.Your modems ethernet cable is properly connected to your computer
3.Network card is properly installed on your computer."

sorry, just realised a mistake, the left led stays orange, not the right.
i did link my xbox 360 to the pc ethernet port however, just to see what would happen, and the right led started blinking green. i dont know where the problem is, the router, my hardware or somehing really simple i havent done. it's the first time i've used anything ethernet.

It is a modem & router combination device?

Besides the light:
Are you able to access the internet?
What is the error message?
Have you try updating the firmware of the modem/router?

I would also try resetting the modem/router

this is the device http://www.dlink.co.uk/?go=gNTyP9CgrdFOIC4AStFCF834mptYKO9ZTdvhLPG3yV3oVo9/hKltbNlwaaFp6DQoHDrryC9K944IBt7n

im using my old sagem usb adsl modem at the moment, which works fine. i've not once got onto the internet using the d-link. the error message appears when the 'click n connect' setup checks for the devices connectivity, and reads this:

"Modem not detected! Please check the following:
1.The power adapter is connected to your modem and electrical outlet
2.Your modems ethernet cable is properly connected to your computer
3.Network card is properly installed on your computer."

resetting the device made no change. i downloaded the recommended firmware upgrade, but i dont know what to do with it. thankx again for the interest and help.
