Question

ethernet not working (windows 8.1)

Apr 11, 2020 1:11PM PDT

I've had my pc for a while now which i've bought from someone else. The problem is that my ethernet connection wont work where i've plugged the cable in from my pc to my router and it says that there is no ethernet detected. All i can say is that the problem started after i installed a new graphics card. If someone could help that would greatly appreciated.

On most motherboards there's a small (green or orange or so) LED near the Ethernet port to show there is connection. Does that light up?

Maybe something is damaged. Maybe the cable isn't well connected? Does it work if you use it if you connect a laptop in stead of your PC?

Hi, the ethernet works on other devices like the laptop I have and also I’m certain it’s not the cable as I’ve tried many already (including a new one). As for the motherboard thing I’ll check in the morning and will update in the morning

I think that means there is a connection. Then it's unclear why Windows says there isn't.
What does Linux say if you boot from a Linux disk or stick (free to make)? If Linux works it's an issue in Windows, if Linux doesn't work it's a hardware issue. In both cases, howecver, I would try a separate Ethernet PCI-card in stead of the port on the motherboard.

I'm afraid it's too difficult to explain here. If you feel you're not capable of
(1) Downloading Linux Mint and burning it to a DVD.
(2) Boot from it
(3) See if Internet works

or
(a) buy an Ethernet PCI-card
(b) install it
(c) install the drivers
(d) see if Ethernet works

better find a repair shop to fix your issue.

I know you said the LED light is green, is it constant green or does it occasionally blink on/off or change color? That would indicate that data is being passed to/from the computer.
