Ethernet IP renewal problem (Newbie)

Sep 19, 2004 3:05AM PDT

Hi! I'm a newbie to networking, so forgive me if I'm not that detailed. I have Windows XP Home at my apartment, and I'm connected to Ethernet from my university network.

Around 20 hours ago, my Internet connection dropped, and I can't get it back on. I double-checked my cables and everything, but it won't fix itself.

When I go to Network Connections and to LAN, it says that there's "limited or no connectivity", and when I try to "repair", it waits for a minute or so, and then says that it can't renew my IP address. I also tried to use the command line prompt to run ipconfig/renew, but it also waits and displays an error message, about a DHCP server (?) time-out.

I highly appreciate any solutions/suggestions. Thanks!

The IT staff of Colleges and Universities will cut off a port if they detect any viral activity. Give them a call and see if you have been banned.

I have the EXACT same problem! I spent 6 hours on the phone today talking to Gateway Tech Support. I want to commit suicide. Are there any people in this world that work tech support AND possess intelligence?!

The only reasonable answer I got was to try booting from the OS disk, and repairing Windows from there. Only freakin' problem is I don't know how. I got to the stage where you press R, and a Dos type command prompt came up, and I got lost...
