Error while installing WINXP

by TheHated / August 8, 2005 3:20 PM PDT

Everything starts up well when I start setup but then when it's copying the files it says cannot find missing file msvcrt.dll, then there's 3 buttons, retry/skip file/ignore. I do retry but nothing works. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Tell more on what you do. What's on the system to start with? A real official Windows XP CD? Do you choose to 'format' or install over the existing Windows 98 installation? Detail the steps you do and the answers you give.

I see two possibilities.
by Kees Bakker / August 9, 2005 6:08 AM PDT

1. The CD is defective, and doesn't contain the file to copy (and it's a necessary file indeed). If this is an official Microsoft CD, make a paper copy of the picture and return the CD to where you bought it.

2. The file is present but can't be copied. Could it be that your hard disk is full?

Have you tried to skip file? I have Windows XP Pro installed over WIN98. Did you choose the upgrade, the one that is recommended. I hope you have DSL,you will get connected to get neccesary files to finish upgrade.Remember I had 98 and now XP PRO,so I acyually know what I;m talking about. Also,if you dowloaded it from Ares it may be one with corrupted files.Good Luck!!
