Question

Error unzipping large file on Mac

Jul 20, 2015 3:37AM PDT

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help with a file issue we’re experiencing on Mac.

Some of our customers have reported unzipping issues with our files, which only seems to affect Macs. The problem only occurs with our larger downloads (5GB plus).

In order to cater for both Mac and PC users we remove all the Mac files on a PC (Windows 7 Professional), zip the file on the PC and then upload them to our Amazon S3 server.

Smaller files don’t seem to cause any issues, but larger file show up with the following error on Mac:

Unable to expand “file-xyz.zip” into “Download Location” (Error 1 - Operation not permitted)

Strangely this error only seems to occur when using the in-built unzipping software, but if the file is being unzipped with ‘Unarchiver’ it works fine.

I have been told this could be caused by us zipping the file on a PC, and while we have found some software that removes Mac files from a zipped file on Mac itself, I was hoping I could get another opinion on this.

Thanks!

Not sure what is going on here, but,

why do you remove the Mac files before zipping the file.

You didn't mention what these files contain but if it is some kind of installer, then
Windows will ignore the Mac files and the Mac will ignore the Windows files as long as the installer is configured correctly.

It may behove you to purchase an app, WinZip for example, and not use the built-in process.

We need to remove the Mac files, as our products are being used on Mac and PC, and the obsolete Mac files confuse our customers with work with PC.

The files don't contain any installers, just files and folders (jpeg, etc.)

Interesting,

jpeg, etc., might indicate that the files you upload are cross platform.

That said, I wonder if the built-in compressor is not really capable of handling the larger file size.

WinZIP is available in a trial version, perhaps you could try that.

Where do these Mac files come from? Presumably you do some production work on a Mac, transfer them to a PC and go from there

I think I will definitely try it with a secondary software.

Indeed we work primarily on Mac, but because we need to remove the Mac files and do testing on PC as well, we tend to just use that.

It really is a shame that some Windows users,

become confused when faced with something different.

Let us know how the secondary software goes
