Resolved Question

Error, Screen messes up on boot but works in safe mode, Win

Aug 11, 2012 11:11PM PDT

I've recently crashed and re-installed Windows XP on my Dell M4300. Completely removing all old data. After installing windows, I updated everything via Windows Update so that everything is good to go.

Now, when I startup windows xp, I get the normal Win XP splash screen: http://tinypic.com/r/2dt5b0g/6

After it loads, the screen immediately changes to this: http://tinypic.com/r/ivkca1/6

And it will stay that way until I manually shut it off. Upon turning it back on, the exact same thing happens. Notice that the messed up screen always looks differently: http://tinypic.com/r/5arg4m/6 (notice the different colors)

However, I can start up in safe mode just fine! No problems whatsoever!

What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

(NT) Looks like you need to install Dell's video drivers?

Yep!

I did a system restore and re-installed all the drivers except for any video-related drivers. That must have been the issue. The video driver I had downloaded before is compatible, but apparently it conflicts with something. Thanks for guiding me in the right direction!

(NT) "compatible" OR "the one from Dell?"

The one from Dell.com's recommendations list

Aha. And it's sad too.

That list appears to cover graphics cards. Not just one. You can try using your SERVICE TAG and see if it narrows it down.

I actually logged into my Dell account and went to my exact build to download the driver Wink I'll try going to NVIDIA directly and finding me a better solution. Not too worried about it. Just wanted to get this old computer up and running again so I can install Ubuntu Happy
