Error message using desktop shortcuts with Vista Home Basic

Jun 27, 2007 7:09AM PDT

I am running Vista Home Basic on a Compaq Presario. I have a number of desktop shortcuts that I created by dragging to the desktop the URL from the address bar on sites that I visit. The shortcuts worked fine until around the end of May. Since that time, if I double click a shortcut I get an error message saying that Windows can't find the location of the requested site, but at the same time the site loads with no problems.
Anybody else having this problem, and any solutions?

(NT) Recreate one and see if the new one works.

I have tried creating a new one by the drag to desktop technique, and I have tried duplicating the existing shortcut. I still get the same results. Interestingly, this only happens with the shortcuts to internet sites. Everything else works fine.

Just sharing.

I was able to recreate this when I changed the default browser from IE to Firefox. Looks like a Microsoft bug (or feature?)

Hi Bob,
I am using Firefox so I think you are correct about it being a Microsoft bug.
As I think I mentioned, everything was working fine until about the end of May. I suspect there was an automatic Windows update that did the damage.
It does not stop me from going where I want to go, but it is a nuisance to have the error message keep popping up.

Thanks,
Claud
