Error message on start-up windows 98

Feb 5, 2004 9:52PM PST

I was using aol, when all of a sudden I received a message that aol had to restart. It would not restart, and suggested I close the program and restart my computer. I did that than on startup I get a message:
Windows protection error; you must restart your computer.
I did that and restarted in safe mode, but don't know where to look to solve this problem. Tried windows help, but it didn't seem to have a topic for anything I punched in. Thanks for any insight on how to fix.

But did you try again?

I read your post and an issue that Microsoft (MS) never resolved was the reliability of what happens when Windows 98 runs out of resources or an application fails. A reboot may land the user in Safe Mode and again, MS considered the users of those days to take the steps to reboot again.

You didn't tell if you did another restart after entering Safe Mode.

Just FYI, there is no patch or repair for this behaviour and there is no plan to create such.

yes I did it three times, and I still can not boot up in normal mode without the error message. What should I do now?

What was the error message?

Now that we know you did reboot more than once, put the error message in "quotes" so we can see it clearly.

In SAFE MODE a few tools you can use are SFC, MSCONFIG, SCANREG (and its restore.)

But so far, it's just time to collect the info.

I did a system file checker, and one file came back corrupted
"setupx.dll c:\windows\system"
It says to restore from istallation disk, but which one should I use?
Thanks again

It's premature to do repairs. My mistake for noting the tools.

What's the error message?

I'd try booting into safe mode, uninstalling AOL, removing all traces of it from your computer, and rebooting. See if that does it. Then reinstall AOL and see if the problem reappears. If it does, call AOL support.
