Error message Java Script Disabled

Aug 23, 2005 10:05AM PDT

Recently I have had two error messages appear, one on my old computer and now on my new one. The first time was when I tried to post a message on a community message board, and I don't remember what I was doing when the message popped up a second time. I am not new to computers and I could write HTML if I had a guide to follow. But Java Script didn't have a place in my vocabulary until this happened. When I tried to find reference to it in my programs, the folders were there but were empty. Do I need to have Java Enabled? If so, would some knowledgeable person please help me with this?

Need more info reply

This error message happened on two different computers.

#1 is a HP 40 GB HD & 400 MB of Ram, OS XP home installed over ME. Browser IE 6. It occurred on this computer after I tried to ask a question on an ebay Comm. Forum for Canadians. The error message did not stay on the screen long enough to quote. The only thing I caught was I needed to have Java Script enabled before I could post any thing to this forum. I had successfully posted before.

#2 was on my new computer Touch Systems 200 GB HD & 1 GB Ram OS XP home, Browser IE6. I do not recall what I was doing when it occurred on this one, it was fairly soon after setup with old one by wireless connection. Again it was the same message, and did not stay on screen long enough to quote. I did have a folder in my programs titled Java but it was empty.

To begin with, Java is not JavaScript. That's quite something else. So be clear about it.
Then, what browser are you using giving this error.
Then, what site, what action, and what exact error message?
Javascript folders? Never seen. What do you mean?
What version of what Java do you have installed, if any.

More Info Error

Thank you for your response to my query, You have asked almost all the same questions as the previous reply. May I ask you to read my response to the first person who replied. It was more than a little verbose, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. The folder I was referring to was in my program files, it was empty and in the confusion of setting up my home network I may have deleted it.

I want to thank you as well as slim__shady for taking the time to help me out.

Re: Javascript errors

Gayle,

http://www.buymebuyme.com/retail/help/javascript.html tells all about enabling Javascript in all browsers you can imagine, including IE6.0. Maybe your settings were changed incidentally.

Other things to try:
- download the latest version of the Windows scripting tools from the link mentioned by Grif Thomas in http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7813-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=27689&messageID=312210 if it's somehow damaged
- go to www.mozilla.org and download the latest version of Firefox. That's another browser than IE (a lot of people use it in stead of IE) and it has its own Javascript engine. So if anything is irrepairably wrong with the one in IE (unlikely, but possible) this might be a very acceptable solution.

Hope this helps.

Thank you

Kees, Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question. I will print your answer and consider doing the things you suggest. The problem has not cropped up again, if so your answer will be posted just above my computer. This is my new one and I already let in a load of crap from a site that I thought could be trusted. I also deleted something that came with the computer and it caused another half day of troubleshooting.
Beginning to think it's jinxed.
Thanks again,
Gayle
