error message

i have an acer aspire 4720Z, intel pentium, 2GB RAM laptop with windows vista home premiu
i keep getting an error message: internet explorer has encountered a problem and will close. i can't get on to the internet in normal mode, only in safe mode with networking. i have not installed any new programs recently. only thing new is a wireless network connection that is not secure. prior to using this connection i had no problems at all. any suggestions/solutions?

1. Scan for malware as suggested by Grif at http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6122_102-311989.html#2880351

2. Use the recovery media to reset the machine to factory (bye bye files we didn't backup.)

3. Considering that exploits like FIRESHEEP and others rely on wireless networks that are not secure, why would we use such?

had already run 2 full virus scans with none detected, cleaned out old files, did a system recovery. mysteriously, IE is now working. i could get online via mozilla firefox during this "event."

Mose of Grif's advice covers malware and spyware scans. Your reply tells me you have more work to do.
