Error message

Mar 6, 2004 11:52AM PST

I logged on to my PC tonight and a message popped up:
Make sure the program V3FAXE28.EXE is running before printing. Make an icon for the program and place it in your start up group. I clicked on OK and it kept popping up. I did a system restore to 9:30 this morning and it was still there. I did a system restore to yesterday morning and it didn't appear again. Is this a legitimate program? I am running XP Pro with multiple users. I ran Norton immediatelyt and nothing showed up.

Re:Error message V3FAXE28.EXE = Get a second opinion.

If a virus/trojan/parasite gets past Norton, it can disable that or hide. It's also true that some pests are not detected by Norton since "it's not a virus." Here's a note about parsites, tests and removal tools.

Sillyarasite removal programs.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0 notes the five scanning tools and removal tools that are fairly safe. If one does encounter an issue, its always been damage done by the MALWARE. The most common issue being Layered Service Provider replacement which you can use LSPFIX (Hint: use http://www.google.com to find).

The thread has follow on discussions about new links if you don't want to use Google to find an item.

PS. All the tools are free.

I suspected as much. We were on the way out of the house when I noticed the problem and I didn't have time to run the suite . Since I have disabled it with system restore, won't I have to clear out system restore to get rid of it? It is my understanding that the suite and AV programs don't check system restore.

SR checking.
Mar 6, 2004 10:35PM PST

The brutal truth is that a file in the SR store is not a threat unless you restore to that date. Some can't stand having the file in that area so the off/on exercise is performed.

As a test, I let one machine alone and in a month the file went away...

As to the Anti-Parasite Suite, maybe, maybe not, but given what's written so far, I don't see a second opinion about this file/exe.

Re:My apologies to all.

I wrote the error mesasge down in a hurry and when I typed it out I wrote it down incorrectly. The correct file name is v3faxecp.exe. After running the suite and finding no errors, I tried to send a test fax and got the same error message. When I tried to reiinstall the program I got an error so I uninstalled the whole thing.

Apparently the program had become corrupted at some time since I last used it. NBD, I can re-install it later.

Thanks for the help ven though I sent you on a wild goose chase.

Google finds no result. I would suspect a parasite. Your virus program will not detect this. Follow this link to download Ad-aware and Spybot. Install, update, then scan. I usually delete all but Microsoft files, with no ill effect, but it's best to read the info on each file before deleting. http://www.pcworld.com

Ernie,
Thanks for the reply.

As I told Robert, I have the Anti Parasite suite but didn't have time to run it when I found the message. I have a fax program called V3 Free Call Center which has several files beginning with V3, but the one mentioned in the error message isn't there.
