Question

error installing 1kernel exe [audio driver]

Apr 21, 2014 2:47AM PDT

Reformatted my Dell Dimension 2350 [XP Home]and all's ok except I have no sound and a yellow ? by multimedia audio controller in device manager.
Also I can't get mp3 files onto my mp3 player via windows media player. Presumably the same issue.
I found the correct driver [supposedly] on the Dell website [there was only one audio driver] and downloaded it [R56339]. However when the install shield comes up it comes up with a message as in the title of the thread. with (0x 10 000). Have tried downloading and installing the driver a few times and always the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Have you tried the Dell forums?

The Dell hardware forums would likely be your best bet to get answers to this. Since XP is no longer supported by MS, you might want to consider switching to something like Linux Mint which has a user interface very similar to Windows.

Good luck.

That's sound advice. To be honest I tried that first and since Dell tell me I've already registered there in the dim and distant past it got into one big muddle about letting me post without changing username and password etc and I just lost patience. Thought I'd try here but you're probably right.

I continue to see banged up XPs.

Before I install the audio driver I install Dell's supplied chipset driver. Otherwise the install may fail.

Also, folk install all sorts of antivirus protection which can block this. And furthermore the folk that fall for registry cleaners does not make this any easier.

The chipset driver was indeed the first driver I loaded. The audio is the last one. I have Avast [free version] and have no idea whether that could cause a problem. I could disable it and try it that way. I never do registry cleaners. That much I know.

I caught McAfee still blocking and it was disabled. For this and other reasons I try it but know to keep removal as an option.

https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=0x10000+failed+to+install finds that installshield failed and since there are so many causes today and the clues are too light, try the top 5 findings and use those ideas.

Remember XP has been around for a very long time. Any XP user should be pretty conversant in this area.

In the future, keep the error number and message AS-IS. It looks like you added spaces to the 0x number.

Answer
It won't hurt to reinstall all drivers from Dell

And Robert mentioned you need to be sure the motherboard drivers for the control chips are installed first.

I might do that. Turning off the anti virus before I start. I have just seen a microsoft general advice on kernel error issues

"This issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing from the Windows\System32 folder:
Stdole32.tlb
Stdole2.tlb
Stdole.tlb

To resolve this issue, expand the appropriate file from the Windows XP CD:
Click Start, click Run, and then type CMD. Click OK.
To change to the root folder of drive C, type cd\, and then press ENTER.
Insert the Windows XP CD, type Expand cd_drive_letter:\i386\filename.tl_ drive:\Windows\system32\filename.tlb, and then press ENTER, where filename is the name of the file that you want to expand and drive is the letter of the drive where Windows is installed."

That's plan B. Plan C will be to figure out how to post on a Dell forum.

Odd. Link shows it may be Office related.
