It failed for me as well. Later I tried again but with another USB stick and it worked. Sadly I didn't keep the stick that didn't work for me so I'm going to share a direct link to what worked as soon as I write this is not a sure fix. But it did help on a Windows 8 laptop that failed with what sounds like the same failure messages.

You may want to reconsider your sequence. That is you tried to do this AFTER installed Norton. That could result in such failures but as you know, Norton lost me years ago.

Acer Iconia W3-810, refurbished, from their authorized reseller. 90 day warranty. Refurbs are not supported by Acer.
Activated the unit and installed Norton 360 protection for portable devices.
Attempting to create USB factory default backup. Followed instructions carefully only to get this message:
"Hard drive configuration not set to the factory default. Restore Aborted."
This message also shows when I choose the "Restore Factory Settings" selection.
How do I correct this so I can make a proper backup?
