ERROR CODE -36 PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

Mar 17, 2009 1:48AM PDT

i have a problem when I'm transferring files from my powerbook g4 to external hard disks such as lacie or ipod. it keeps popping up "THE FINDER CANNOT COMPLETE THE OPERATION BECAUSE SOME DATA IN file.avi COULD NOT BE READ OR WRITTEN. (ERROR CODE -36)

*This happens just for certain files, not all of them. I don't know whether the hard disk has an issue or the file is corrupted and if it is corrupted i hope there is a program that can restore it

i would be glad if someone could help me out. i don't wanna loose the already corrupted files

thanks

try moving the "corrupted" files

from one folder to another on the PowerBook and hold down the Option key when you move them.

The option key will force the system to copy the file, rather than just move it. If it copies well, try moving it from its new location onto the external.

Also, try burning a copy onto a CD.

Do you have a problem with the suggestions?

Would it make you happier if I told you that a -36 error is the OS X way to telling you that there has been an Input/Output error and that it is classified by Apple as being a "Bummer"?

I offered you two suggestions, both of which have worked for others with similar problems. Do with them as you see fit.

Did you MOVE it to another folder on your desktop or did you COPY it?

If you copied it, then try moving the copy to the external. Remember, it could be a corrupted external.

Try creating a folder on the external an copy to there.

I have a solution if someone needs it! compress the file or object you need copying and extract it to the destination drive i.e. ext hd works every time.
