error cant read disk information/ cant use hdd alert

toshiba sat. c655d running windows 7 home premium sp1 got error cant read disk info./cant use hdd alert. still have most files if not all ;boots up screen display ok shows program shortcuts toolbar icons shows internet connection with yellow notification icon laid ober it with black ! point cant run any programs all come back w/same error message whats wrong

I'll skip the restore from backup or backup what you can't lose discussion. You know this.

This is usually some HDD failure. If you don't want to buy a new HDD use the recovery media on that laptop and it will be just like it was when you bought it. The HDD sounds corrupts so you try this first. Next you replace the HDD (these are cheap compared to a new laptop.)
