Error 197 (low level kernel error)

Mar 17, 2004 4:57AM PST

My computer has been running slower and slower for about 2 weeks, now it is displaying the error message "error 197 - unable to initialize low level kernel services". I have no idea what this means. Does anybody have an idea on how to correct this? Thanks in advance.

This doesn't look right at all. A few things to try before formatting and reinstalling Windows:
- run SFC to extract a fresh copy of kernel32.dll from your Windows 98 CD (make a copy of current one before)
- run all 5 programs of Bob's Anti-Parasite Suite (http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6618-0.html?forumID=6&threadID=15518&messageID=174051)
- check your RAM with the disk made by the program you can download from www.memtest86.com
- reset the BIOS to default values

If the problem persists after a format/reinstall, it's some hardware problem. It's difficult to tell, IMO.

Good luck,
