Question

Error 1606

Apr 25, 2011 6:32PM PDT

I'm having an issue when trying to install some, but not all apps. On some of them, inclluding Service Pack 1 for Win 7 pro 64 bit, I get a message saying Error 1606 could not access network location %PUBLIC%\Desktop\. I've read through over a hundred posts dealing with error 1606, but not with the wording that appears in my error message. Can someone please, please help me before I pull all of my hair out?

Thanks

JimB

Clarification Request
Microsoft 886594 Didn't Work, Neither Did The C-net Thread
Apr 26, 2011 12:50AM PDT

Yeah, I've tried Microsoft solution and ran their "fix it for me" app. It didn't work. As for reading the C-net forum, I've already read all 125 of the posts. My registry items all read the way that they're supposed to. Otherwise I wouldn't have started this thread.
They're all talking about %APPDATA%, mine doesn't read that way at all, mine is reading %PUBLIC%\Desktop\, and I've not seen any of the posts addressing that particular problem. Also, I'm talking about Win 7 pro 64 bit, not XP and not Vista the only systems I remember seeing was for those two systems. Rest assured I tried Microsoft first, then C-net, if I'd found the fix there I wouldn't have posted.

Maybe That's The Point Exactly
Apr 26, 2011 2:11AM PDT

A quick check of my Windows 7 32 bit registry here, shows there is only one location for the "%PUBLIC%\Desktop\" registry entry..It's listed under "Common Desktop" at the registry key here: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders". There is one NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE here though.. ON MY computer, the registry value is "%PUBLIC%\Desktop" (WITHOUT the final "backslash").. Open "regedit" and try removing the final backslash from the Common Desktop value at the location I've listed (RIGHT click on "Common Desktop" value, choose "modify") AFTER making a backup of the registry, then close the registry editor to save the change..

At the other locations mentioned in all the previous articles, in both the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders and the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders locations, it indicates: "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" or "C:\Users\myusername\Desktop" respectively.. As you've mentioned, that's not issue you're having.

Hope this helps.
