Ergo E2050-X wireless problem

My Son has just been given an old laptop which is an Ergo E2050-X running Windows XP Professional. He asked me to get rid of all of the old stuff on it and I just restored it using the disk provided. I then installed all of the drivers and checked that everything was OK. All worked apart from the wireless connection which said that it needed the hardware switched on. There is no manual switch on the computer to do this. The laptop is old about 2005 I would say by the manual.
Is there anything that I might have missed?
Although Windows says that there is a wireless connection is there none?
Does it need an external piece of hardware that I dont know about?
Can I buy something to make it work and what would it be?
