Question

Engine momentarily dies and reruns randomly

Sep 7, 2017 12:26PM PDT

Hello everyone, I have a diesel Peugeot 206 (1.4 HDi).
The engine of the car started randomly dying and rerunning instantaneously while on the run. My observation is that it becomes more frequent when the air gets colder (or when the climate changes in general), or when I buy a bit cheaper diesel 2-3 times in a row. It has been an issue for almost 2 years now, finally today the engine ceased responding to gas for a brief time and later simply died (for good, instead of usual momentary die-off and rerunning). I was not able to start the engine for about 30 seconds. When I was going to call for a tow truck, it started after my final attempt.
A mechanic told me it may be related to a diesel pressure sensor fault. What do you say, and is it something I can fix myself?

similar to the old enemy of carburetor icing. I suppose something similar could happen with diesel. I had a car that would do this when it was colder and humid enough to cause fog. The inrush of air and expansion as it passes through the venturi is just enough to begin icing up below it and cause loss of the "venturi effect". That effect is what creates the negative pressure needed to draw fuel into the system. I would need to stop the car and wait a few minutes for the ice to melt off and then I could drive again. This can be caused by non-preheated air entering the intake and may be caused by some sensor that's not detecting the air temperature. Just a thought but I'm not sure how diesels work. Good luck.
