Email setup problem on Acer Aspire One netbook

by rochewja / December 21, 2008 8:47 AM PST

I recently bought an Acer Aspire One netbook with o/s Linpus Linux Lite. I set up an email account in Yahoo but when I try adding it to Aspire One email accounts the system tries verifying the email server for about a minute and then returns the message that it is unable to access the email server.
However, my wife and I have had standard Yahoo email accounts for about 6 months and I could add both of these to the Aspire email accounts without any problems.
Because the system doesn't recognise the email account, I can't set up the Messenger either.
I would appreciate any help with this.

Try a Gmail account.

That yahoo email did work via the web page but you may have been trying for POP mail (but I couldn't tell from your post.) Yahoo has PAY email which you get POP mail. The freebie doesn't have such.

Acer Aspire One Email

In reply to: Try a Gmail account.

The Yahoo account I've been using for six months isn't a PAY account - it's a freebie. The same for my wife's Yahoo account. I added both of these to Aspire one Mail by Adding them on the Accounts screen. They are both POP3 and they were verified immediately and worked fine through Aspire One Mail.
However, when I set up a new Yahoo account, identical to the existing accounts I have, and tried to add this to Aspire One Mail, I get the message that it is unable to access the email server, even though the new account is set up (POP3) the same as the old ones which were accepted.
However, I've successfully managed to add a gmail account (I'd previously tried adding it as a which it didn't like but it seems happy with so thanks for that suggestion. Unfortunately, the Messenger doesn't seem to like the gmail account and gives me the message that is error and Login failed, no reply.
Anyway, I'm further on than I was so thanks again for your help and I appreciate any other tips you may have.

Thanks for all your help Bob. I've tried various permutations of the settings for Yahoo but I'm still getting the message that says unable to access server.
I think I'll focus on gmail now as at least I've had some success with that.
