Email from Dec to Present Disappeared

Hi,
Last night after reading my email, the prompt came up to compress email to free space. I did that, shut down, and when I went on this morning all the emails from Dec. to present disappeared. The Nov. etc. emails cannot be opened. It says "has not been downloaded yet". I can still receive emails.
I have XP and am using Outlook Express.
