email addys

Is there a way to write email address in a such way that it won't be picked up by bulk mailers, or worse yet by nefarious persons? Like adding special character? Let's say I have yahoo email. Instead of ed@yahoo.com which can be picked up easily. Would ed91$@yahoo.com work? Or is that not possible and that I just need to share my addy only with friends and trusted companies?

Thanks,
