IE6 doesn't do email. But a mailto:someone@so.com may launch your email program you selected in Tools, Internet Options.

1. The list of Internet services/programs available for use in Internet Explorer (Tools, Internet Options, Programs) must be registered before use. If options are null (blank), it may be that during the installation of a specific program or Internet Explorer itself that appropriate information was not found, an install was not successful, or there was corruption in the following system registry address. What this means is that even though you find a mail program or know for a fact that an installed was attempted, it does not mean that every single bit or byte is where they belong or that Internet Explorer likes what it finds. Consider yourself lucky perhaps that things work at all.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Your_Mail_Client_Name

2. The first thing to consideration is to acquire and reinstall the application wanted besides Internet Explorer itself. From the Add/Remove Programs applet, select Microsoft Internet Explorer [something], Add/Remove, and then from the resulting menu, select Add a component. If this means Outlook Express -- even though the module is already seen on the system, perform the in-place reinstallation described.

3. The article [Q154359] explains that in Internet Explorer, the registered default mail client URL:MailToProtocol file type should list mail programs that can be chosen and made up of registry keys that outline the behavior of the program used. With the values that are stored in the registry for extended services such as mail and news, it is possible for Internet Explorer to start programs that provide specialized Internet services. However, some programs may modify the options available without updating the list, such as the Eudora Internet mail client.

4. The article [Q181419] discusses two methods for troubleshooting the behavior and explains that when clicking Mail on the Standard Buttons toolbar in Internet Explorer and then clicking either New Message, Send Link, or Send Page, the computer may stop responding (hang). This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions exist:

Microsoft IntelliPoint software version 1.0 or 1.1 is installed on your computer.

Outlook Express is your default e-mail program.

Outlook Express is configured to send messages immediately.

5. The article [Q306098] warns that when you attempt to use OE to send mail from a hyperlink, to send mail by using the "Send To" feature of another program, or to send mail by using the "New Message" feature in IE, it does not occur if OE is not registered as the default e-mail program or the default OE mail client string values in the registry is corrupted or missing.

6. The Windows XP article [Q308081] discusses the same general scenario as the above reference and states that if Microsoft Outlook is installed when you attempt to compose a new e-mail message by using any of those methods, you receive the error message below or nothing happens. If Outlook is not installed and you attempt to compose a new e-mail message by using any of those methods listed, the MSN Explorer e-mail client does not start. As a result, you are unable to compose a new e-mail message.

Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client.
