I've owned the T6522 for over 2 weeks now and I am impressed.
This is the fifth eMachines that I have bought my family in the last 12 months (one for my dad last year, one T6522 for my brother, one T6522 for me and two for my brother in laws business). What the eMachines brand provides me now is an easy way for me to purchase new computers -- I know that I am getting excellent value (especially with desktop package deals offered by the major vendors), that cannot be beat with any other brand.
I am the type that does excruciatingly painful research before buying anything. But for computer purchases, I just look for the latest eMachines offers from Circuit City, Best Buy or Compusa (I usually buy from Circuit City, since they have these off models that are sold only at circuit city (e.g. T6522). Then I look at boards, such as this one to see if there are any systematic issues with the system -- then I purchase. I now wait until they have desktop packages (monitor, computer and printer) -- note that at CC you can substitute any monitor for the monitor in the package and still get the 150 to 120 dollar rebate -- trust me, the most sales people don't know this -- you can also upgrade the printer as well).
The quality of the systems has been good for us (only confirmed issue is the inability to create the DVD system back-up -- which is a non issue, since you can burn to the provided CDs -- this has no impact on your ability to burn DVDs).
INCLUDES TV TUNER AND FM RADIO
Both work very well. I am currently taking an analog cable in and watching live tv/recording & pausing live TV and playing it back. Even when the computer is recording a TV show, I am working on the computer doing other things (e.g. photo editing/internet browsing) with no apparent slow down). The quality of the recording is fine -- my current quality bottleneck is the weak analog cable feed (I split it many times and the signal is degraded). The FM tuner works great.
IMPRESSIVE REMOTE
The remote has great signals with the PC. You can point it to anywhere in the remove (and as long as there is obstruction) the PC will receive the signal. The key here is to put the IR receiver on the edge of the table so the front is at edge of the table. The only complaint that I have is that the buttons are a little stiff, but I believe this will soften as I use the remote more.
PERFORMANCE IS GREAT
I was watching a previously ripped DVD in Media Center while I was ripping another DVD into computer. Everything was smooth -- I was very impressed. I also do other multi-tasking (recording TV while doing other things on the computer, etc) and this computer has performed well.
TWO THINGS MISSING
The only two things missing for me was a TV out and a digital audio out. The missing TV out was a non issue, since I am planning on having a dual monitor set-up with one being the LCD monitor and the other being a 50" HDTV plasma tv -- so I needed to upgrade to a newer graphics cards with DVI (digital video) outputs anyways (to get the best quality feed into the plasma). Since the integrated sound card is a 5.1 surround sound card (you have to go into Control Panel to change the configuration), I can simply connect the RCA jacks to a 5.1 speaker system (e.g. Logitech z5500). If I am not satisfied with this sound, I will only add digital audio support if the sound is unacceptable.
Note: Do not buy the GEFORCE 6200TC for this computer. I bought the MSI GEFORCE 6200TC (installed new drivers and all that) and there was visual artifacts and it froze my system when I go into dual monitor mode or run Media Center. Microsoft website says that GEFORCE 6200TC is a certified graphics card -- I don't know if this was a defective card or not, but didn't want to mess with it any further.
BOTTOMLINE
T6522 is a monster of a computer for the price you pay. In general you will get consistently the best value from eMachines. If you are a hardcore gamer, you will need to upgrade the graphics card (be wary of the power supply).
RULE OF THUMBS WHEN BUYING A COMPUTER
Here's the rule of thumb that I currently recommend to my family/friends:
- Get a full blow CPU (e.g. Athlon, Pentium -- do not get Celeron or Sempron or any other crippled CPUs)
- Minimum of 512MB that is upgraded to at least 1GB by adding 512MB of memory. Trust me the memory is the single biggest factor for performance.
- Minimum of 160GB of HD. More if you are going to record TV shows/movies.
- Read up on boards like these to find out issues with the current releases
