EMachines T3656 Extremely Slow...

Jan 29, 2010 1:02AM PST

Hello cnet!

I am here to hopefully get help for my stepmom's computer. She has an EMachines T3656 Desktop computer running Windows Vista. Here are the specs:

* Intel Celeron M440, 2.0 GHz
* 1GB DDR2 Memory
* 160GB
* 18X SuperMulti DVD-RW Drive
* Vista Home Basic

So here's the problem: Her computer is slower than a snail, literally. If I can remember correctly, it was nice and fast when she first got it but it didn't take long for it to slow down so much. My 4 year old laptop(running XP, 512 RAM, 2.0gHz) is faster than her desktop.

I did everything I knew to try and make her computer faster; I ran a full AdAware scan, Spybot S&D scan, did a full AVG computer scan, removed a lot of old files and programs she didn't need anymore, and also removed some startup programs via WinPatrol. To my surprise, this made her computer even slower! Whenever I do even just one of the above tasks to my laptop, my laptop speeds up but her's just became more dreadfully slower.

We also use MagicJack's phone service, and my dad uses it to fax a lot of stuff with the faxer/printer, hooked up to the computer above. It always seemed to work fine until the computer started getting slow. Now, he can't even send out faxes via the faxer/printer(Not sure about receiving them). Hopefully this problem will be fixed if we can get the computer to speed up again.

Hopefully you guys can help me out here, my stepmom and I have no clue what to do with her computer. I was thinking about downgrading it do XP, but if I can get her computer going again without that, that would be way better.

Thank you for your help!

Should have made it more clearer in the above post: internet seems to be average speed, just starting her computer up, and doing anything else is extremely slow.

That should be slow. Nothing wrong.

Ours didn't run well until we kicked in another 2GB RAM.

Your post is fine, the machine is however a slow one. It will be faster when new because it's free of pests and no one installed much. Later, with updates and more, it should be a dog.

Some things you can do.

If Spybot S&D was installed before you use it, you may try uninstalling it, or at least ensure it's Advanced Mode "Tea Timer" is not active.

The same with Lavasoft's AdAware Adwatch function

Neither of these work well with today's anti-viruses.

Also, check how AVG is working on this system, especially at startup. When Windows is loaded and usable use the Task Manager. Open the Task Manager, (right click the Taskbar, select the Manager), then the Processes tab.

Make sure the Task Manager shows processes for all users, then click the CPU column either just once or twice to list all processes with the highest CPU usage at the bottom.

Watch out for any avgxxx processes using a lot of CPU. (xxx means any other letters). If so, then AVG may be the problem.

Thanks for the tips Proffitt and Mark.

Since I will probably not need S&D and AdAware for a while(just did the scans with this) can I uninstall them both?

I will also check out the task manager and see what's running and what the CPU meter shows.

If none of that works, I'll let her know about getting more RAM. More ram should show at least some improvement, correct? I know how to install the RAM chips and all, I just want to make sure it will help before I tell her to spend $XX.

I'll let you know what happens in a few days Happy

Please change away from Spybot and Adaware.
