Eliminate Spyware/Malware etc. before fixing Registry Probs?

by NorthBeachnik / November 9, 2007 12:11 PM PST

Am I right to assume that I should eliminate all malware and be sure that I have taken back control of my work laptop from some hacker who got control and used this machine to spam all over the place (yes, my work laptop is on dslreports.com blacklists of spamming machines -lots of lists). I'm still using cleaners, spybot s&d, AVG anti-virus, AVG anti-spyware, ATF Cleaner, etc. I couldn't get Ad Aware SE Personal to download properly. Same thing with House Call (problem with the Java download aspect of the House Call process).

I'm posting my Hijack This results on CastleCops.com, of course.

CCleaner's registry scan shows lots of many different types of issues. I haven't fixed them yet. Am I doing the right thing?

I do not want to turn this computer back into my consulting client only to have to tell them that everything must be taken off and the deepest reformatting must be done. This is a Lenovo 3000 N100 Windows XP SP2 machine...slowed...down...to a...crawl.

I've spoken with Lenovo. They just said to wipe it clean and reformat from FAT 32 to NTSF.

I'm fighting to keep from doing that in order to save a file older filled with personal research (hobbies, personal interest, etc.). I do not want to lose nearly a half of year's worth of bookmarks, documents, research, etc.).

Back to the registry fix. Just leave it for now???

Could it be the Net Adapter allowing File Share and Internet
by NorthBeachnik / November 9, 2007 2:59 PM PST

Thanks, Marianna! I won't touch the Registry.

Could the hacker have turned my client's laptop (onloan to me) into a spambot because the laptop was sent home with me with the Net adapter configured as follows?:

"Client for Microsoft networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
