Electronic Recycling Pickup - Deborah Ferrari

Jun 30, 2015 10:40PM PDT

Hi All,

I'm Deborah Ferrari. I'm new to this forum ans this is my first post here. I would like a discussion and suggestion for a small business or we say work for social cause. I'm thinking of a business in which one offer to pick up all the e-waste that's been collecting in people garages — old televisions, broken laptops, defunct cellphones — and bring them to your local electronic recycling facility. Hence preventing environment from harmful effects of e-waste and also making money out of it.

Looking forward for you suggestions.

Thanks.
Deborah Ferrari.

I know of 2 states and in one you would incur a heavy fee for such. That is, a old RPTV cost 150 bucks at the recycle center to leave it with them. So to make money you would have to charge that plus get enough for operation of your truck, staff and shop.

In another state your shop would be visited by the local EPA and more to be inspected as a hazardous waste treatment site. You would have to install containment systems, have procedures in various books and training for the employees.

Maybe you can do better by crafting a web site showing when the free ecycle days and sites are and then charge for transport of big items like RPTVs to said site.

My bet is each US state has such rules.

As to the site, I'm sorry if I was unclear. That would be for you to create so folk could know what days free ecycle drop offs were available.

But part of your work is to learn the laws in each state about business licenses, transport of hazardous materials and more.

There has been a move to classify such as hazardous waste due to Pb in older electronics. Some items have mercury in tilt sensors, and old fire alarms fall into another bucket with low level radioactive components.

You as the creator of all this have a lot of work ahead of you.
