Electronic Circuit Noob

So I am doing this hack on my alarm clock so when the alarm gets triggered in the morning it will start up my homemade motor. From what I can see the speaker wire is the only wire that gets activated when the alarm goes off but it doesn't get near enough volts to get the job done. There are other spots on the PCB that have a constant amount of power to run it but then it would be running all the time.

So my thought was if I get a voltage regulator will that bumbs the speaker power up from .7 volts to 5 volts will that fix it or is it a fire waiting to happen?

Maybe that's not even what a regulator is for. I don't know, but that's why I came to you CNET. Always there when my own stupidity drops out on me. Happy

What about a relay to control higher voltage

The .7 volts triggers the relay which completes the circuit from the transformer in the clock to the motor.

I was looking on Radio Shack's website for relays and most if not all of them were something along the lines of 12VDC. The power coming from the radio is AC power because it is ran from the house wall i think? So I guess my question is will that relay still work or will I need to change the power supply?

The radio itself runs on DC power

which is feed to it via a transformer on the end of the 120v input from the AC power outlet.

One more thing. When trying to find a suitable power supply from the radio, can I use the power the radio is sending to the speaker or will I need to find a different supply of power. Also, if it is the latter how would I find the power? Just check for volts on different parts? Thanks for the help by the way.

That might work.

something in there is probably using 12V and with the relay you can tap the 120 before the transformer.

Seems like a lot of sugar for a nickel though

This probably sounds stupid but it will pull back my blinds on the window...

Okay so just for clarification I can use the 12 volts to trigger the relay which will let the 120 volts flow to the electromagnet which will power the motor?

Not what I would suggest now that you have explained

what this motor does.

Use the relay to trigger the 120V that is already driving the blinds.

Perhaps the relay could replace, or combine with, the existing switch.

If I am correct (which I'm probably not) some parts of the clock are dc and some are ac powered. I've almost completely switched up my plan and found a dc motor. How would I go about finding a positive and negative power supply for it?

Feel free to tell me I'm stupid because I feel like it.
