Editing video on a PC recorded on DVD-R from a camcorder

Dec 17, 2005 3:53AM PST

I am considering buying the Sony DCR-DVD403. If I record videos using the Sony on DVD-R or DVD-RW, and then store it on my PC, can I edit that file? I see in the CNET camcorder buyers guide, it indicates that video recorded on DVD-R cannot be edited. However, in talking to others I have heard the contrary.

" can I edit that file? " = No.

But it is possible to create new files from that content.

I hope you understand that editing of the original is unlikely.

Why not do it the right way...

As Bob mentioned, you won't be able to "edit" the original data if you first record to a DVD, so if you are willing to go through the extra steps of first going backwards to get data from a DVD, why don't you simply start the right way and get a mini-DV camera? The data will be much better and the download/edit steps will be direct instead of taking all the steps needed to retrieve data from a DVD. Of course, if your computer isn't setup with a Firewire card, you'll need to do that first, but the effort is well worth it.
